Fuzz Boy

Two-way speaker inspired by a Japanese mascot

I made this fuzzy creature for a class where we were taught the basics of speaker building and design. As I made my way through the class, I quickly realized that I was unlikely to understand the science and calculations of audiophile-level quality speakers. To that end, I decided to make a visually appealing speaker. I was inspired by the character of Domo, the mascot of Japanese broadcaster NHK. The blank eyes and toothy mouth are adorable to me.

I used a Pyle PLG5C 5-1/4" Component System and a Lepai LP-2024A amplifier. There are three chambers within the speaker. The two on either side has the woofers and tweeter while the middle chamber houses the amp and crossovers. The 3A converter that came with the amp wasn't particularly great so I use a 5A one that allows the amp to go to about 75% volume before distortion kicks in. Additionally, there is pyramid foam along the back wall.
